This would have been the 13th video in Marching music for the New Jersey, D.C., Montana, New Mexico, and South Dakota primaries, so I'm sharing it here instead.
This video wasn't on-topic enough for Examinations of Disney v. DeSantis from CNBC, Wall Street Journal, and Yahoo! Finance.
Rejected video for back to school post
Aug. 30th, 2021 10:22 amI decided against using the following video in Masks on the agenda as students return to school in Michigan, a pandemic update because it wasn't about masks, even though it was about back to school.
I was here to say the same thing, but I guess Lauren Boebert will be the new Kristi Noem instead.

Now my final response, which is April's second most read tweet so far.
Sarah Palin at least graduated from college, although it took three tries.
— Pinku Sensei (@pinkusensei) April 1, 2021
I was being charitable. From Wikipedia:
After graduating from high school in 1982, Palin enrolled at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.[26] Shortly after arriving in Hawaii, Palin transferred to Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu for a semester in the fall of 1982. She returned to the mainland, enrolling at North Idaho College, a community college in Coeur d'Alene, for the spring and fall semesters of 1983.[27] She transferred and enrolled at the University of Idaho in Moscow for an academic year starting in August 1984. Beginning in the fall of 1985, she attended Matanuska-Susitna College in Alaska. Palin returned to the University of Idaho in January 1986 and received her bachelor's degree in communications with an emphasis in journalism in May 1987.
More like six attempts at five different colleges.
Ideas for a YouTube channel 1
Nov. 9th, 2020 09:50 pmAs a result of the pandemic, I uploaded instruction videos for my classes to YouTube under my real name, which I'm not sharing now, so I'm officially a YouTube creator. I can keep loading up instruction videos for my classes to that channel, but some of those would be educational videos influenced by the urban exploration videos I watch of places where my students take field trips, like the Detroit Zoo, Cranbrook Institute of Science, and Grand Ledge. That might get some more page views and make me a better videographer. It would also help my students. I already replaced my smartphone so I could do that.
I have another idea that wouldn't be work-related, which I'll share later, maybe tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Vox looks at clouds
Sep. 4th, 2020 01:54 pmWhat different clouds mean, explained for kids.
When I taught astronomy, the first exercise I had my students do was look at clouds and classify them. Yes, that's meteorology, not astronomy, but at least it got them to look up at the sky and examine what they saw. This would have been a handy video back then, 22 years ago, long before YouTube existed.
Vox looks at a robin's nest
Sep. 2nd, 2020 06:47 pmAn ornithologist explains how robin hatchlings and their parents keep their nest clean.
Welcome to our first-ever week of programming for kids!
Meant for kids or not, I still learned something from this and was reminded of things I'd learned but forgot and I have a Ph.D. in Biology!
Continuing from Saturday, here is another video that didn't make the cut, as I already had enough material for questions to ask my students.
Follow along as our Curator of Earth and Life Sciences, John Zawiskie, walks through some of the greatest specimens in our collection that once roamed the Earth more than 11,000 years ago.
Stay tuned, as I have one more video for my geology students and several for my environmental science students.
A video my students almost watched, part 1
Aug. 8th, 2020 04:26 pmNow for a video that didn't make the cut because I had enough questions from the first three (actually the first two; the third just reinforced the material).
Today we’re showing off a Cranbrook Institute of Science fan favorite: Our T. rex, Black Beauty. Join our Curator of Earth and Life Sciences, John Zawiskie, as he uncovers the history, anatomy, and behaviors of this infamous species.

A video my students are watching, part 2
Aug. 6th, 2020 03:41 pmSince the local museum hasn't reopened yet, I'm sending my students on a virtual field trip with videos produced by the museum. Here's the second.
Explore fossils you would find in the bedrock of Michigan from 380 million years ago! Our Curator of Earth and Life Sciences, John Zawiskie, uncovers what once roamed Michigan’s tropical seas with specimens from our collections. From corals, to trilobites, to Petoskey stones, and more, learn about the history that lies beneath Michigan and what that teaches us about the natural world around us today.
Now the questions I'm asking my students to answer as they watch the video.
12. What is the name of the period and the absolute age of the bedrock under metro Detroit?
13. What is the name for loose pieces of these rocks? HINT: It's the Michigan State Rock.
14. What modern location was Michigan like at this time?
15. How many days were there in a year when these rocks were deposited?
16. What organisms created the reefs that became the rocks under Detroit? Name at least two.
17. What other organisms lived in the reefs? Name at least two.
18. Which mineral sometimes replaced the shells of some fossils and interior of burrows?
19. What was the climate like in Michigan when these organisms lived and the bedrock formed? HINT: It's in the titles of the videos.
20. Which mineral and energy resources can people get out of limestone?

Aug. 5th, 2020 04:25 pmSince the local museum hasn't reopened yet, I'm sending my students on a virtual field trip with videos produced by the museum. Here's the first.
Our Curator of Earth and Life Sciences, John Zawiskie, is diving into one of his favorite topics: meteorites. Discover what different types of meteorites look like, how they impact Earth, and what they’re made of.
Now, the questions I'm asking them of the video.
1. What is the most primitive meteorite type?
2. What is it made of?
3. How did this type of meteorite form?
4. What is the second meteorite type shown in the video?
5. What is it made of?
6. How did this type of meteorite form?
7. What is the third meteorite type shown in the video?
8. What is it made of?
9. How did this type of meteorite form?
10. How old is the oldest dated material in the Solar System?
11. What is the name and age of the crater formed by the asteroid that killed the non-avian dinosaurs?
There are two more videos and another set of questions to come. Stay tuned.

I replaced the following video for one that was shorter and to the point in White House blocking CDC from testifying before Congress on reopening schools.
During an interview with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Dr. Anthony Fauci again warned states about 'skipping steps' and reopening too soon as the Covid-19 coronavirus surges in many US states.

Here's a video I should have included in Marching Music for the Alaska Democratic Primary at Crazy Eddie's Motie News.
Thee Northern Sound, which was for a long time Alaska's only marching band, is preparing to head to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

I rejected the following video for Michigan colleges and universities suspend in-person classes after state of emergency declared over coronavirus. This was despite having the best description. The others had better visuals.
State universities and colleges have canceled in-person classes and transitioned to online classes for a designated period of time or through the end of the semester after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency Tuesday in relation to the new virus in Michigan.
