I made two comments about what I'd post on July 4th. First, from the most recent weekly roundup:
I began July by wishing Detroit's neighbors across the river Happy Canada Day! It's the first of three patriotic holidays I celebrate on my blogs during the month of July, so expect greetings for July 4th and 14th as well.
Then, in part one of my sustainability news linkspams, I speculated on what I'd do for July 4th.
I might also make a special post on July 4th to observe Kunstler's My Tea Party, which was posted almost exactly a year ago. He's also swimming against the flow in that one. Since I'm a member of Coffee Party USA, I really can't leave that opportunity unexploited.
Why not combine the two?

First, happy U.S. Independence Day!

And now, James Howard Kunstler's My Tea Party, edited for clarity and Fair Use, with commentary afterwards. )

Local politics -- schools, zoning, council elections -- hit us where we live. So why don't more of us actually get involved? Is it apathy? Dave Meslin says no. He identifies 7 barriers that keep us from taking part in our communities, even when we truly care.
This is the YouTube version of a video that has been posted to the main page and by Annabel Park to hers. Watch to see how intentional exclusion keeps participation in local government down. Then think about how to improve participation in local govenment.

Which drink best describes your personality -- tea or coffee?

Pity I don't usually pay much attention to NaBloPoMo's writing prompts, as I could really write a long one about this one. However, it's good tomorrow, too. *Has plans*

Right now, Coffee Party USA is voting on the slogans that will be on our lawn signs. If you're on Facebook, vote by surfing here. If you've already voted, thank you!

Here's to slogans that make you laugh, then make you think. Here's to hoping they inspire you to take action, too.

Coffee Party Survivor Logo
coffee party logo new

Yes, folks, these are new logos for Coffee Party USA.

The top one is the logo for our Survivor: Trickle-Down Economics video project, which is part of our Coffee Break Campaign to Save America. It's also the current logo on Coffee Party USA's Facebook page. The bottom one was the previous logo on the Facebook page.

Don't worry about the old logo. It's still being used on the website.

Above will be crossposted to the Coffee Party USA communities on Dreamwidth and Livejournal.

Those of you who know that I used to be a huge Survivor fan might think that I had something to do with that first logo. I only helped to suggest the theme. Lots of other people ran with the idea and did the hard work.

Now the badges for this post--Word for the monthly theme and Art for the logo designs.

Rutgers University: President of AAU Warns of Growing Economic Divide in America
March 03, 2011
By John Chadwick

The president of the Association of American Universities told an audience of Rutgers academic and administrative leaders recently that the challenges facing higher education in 21st-century America are rooted in the growing disparities of wealth and income.

“The most ominous threat to America and its institutions . . . is the growing and in some sense relentless division of wealth in this society,” said Robert M. Berdahl during a morning presentation, “Challenges Facing American Public Research Universities Today,” in the Board Room of Winants Hall.
For my Science Saturday series on Overnight News Digest at Daily, I've been featuring research news at the major public research universities in the states where the public employees unions have been under threat from newly elected Republican governors. The first week I highlighted Wisconsin. Last week, I added Ohio and Indiana. This week, I added New Jersey to the list, which is how I found this. I couldn't have asked for a better headliner if I had wished for it. If I can't find enough articles, I'll add Michigan and/or Florida to the list as well. I'll certainly be adding them next week.

Finally, the Nablopomo badge for this month. I placed it at the end because I want the first image to show up when this post gets linked on Facebook.

spam

Not all my work for the Coffee Party is fun or glamourous. I just spent the past hour deleting spam comments from our blog. I hate spam and get a kick out of eliminating it, but purging two month's worth is a bit much.

Also, this post is a test of the crossposting function. Let's see if it works.

Two diaries on Daily Kos rec list at same time 01

This is something I've never accomplished before, and something that isn't commonly done. I will have to say it's less difficult now than before the site redesign, but it's still not easy.

In case you want to read the two diaries, here are the links to them.
