In the previous digest, I promised "global and national environmental issues, local (Michigan and Metro Detroit) sustainability issues, and Tea Party screw-ups." I'll do the first one, as I just posted an entry on that general topic.

Next Media Animation on the Keystone XL pipeline

Next Media Animation on Thanksgiving food inflation

Phil Plait on saving Earth from asteroids

Nebris and I have a conversation

A video gift from a student

Yes, I posted that one before. It's worth seeing again. Besides, I'm an environmentalist; I recycle.

The village of Wukan, China, in open revolt

The situation in Wukan escalates

More paranoia about Agenda 21

You'll see this one again, as it's about Tea Partiers screwing up.

Next Media Animation thinks low birth rates in the U.S. and China aren't all good

Next Media Animation on Canada leaving the Kyoto Protocol, plus a Rick Perry joke

With that last entry, the topics complete the circle, as the first and last are about Canadian tar sands.

There's a new reality dating show on TLC called Geek Love, which started at New York Comic Con with "sci-fi" speed dating and continues after that, showing the geeks in their daily lives, and following them in their quest for love!

If Li Anne had been there, she would have joined that speed dating session. To find out why, watch as Li Anne gives you her top 8 Reasons Why You Should Date a Geek!
I wonder if anyone has told Li Anne that she should be careful what she wishes for.

The Pirate Party first began in Sweden. However, soon the international pirate party movement took off.

The German Pirate Party won 8.5% of the vote in Sunday's Berlin state elections, winning its first seats in the state legislature.

The SDP and German Green party did well and will probably form a coalition, but the Pirate Party will add a new voice to German politics.

The party's platform calls for the decriminalization of downloading, free internet in cities and the legalization of marijuana.

It's not the first wacky party to make a splash in Europe. Jon Gnarr became Mayor of Reykjavic on promises of open corruption and a polar bear.
I know it's no longer Talk Like a Pirate Day here, but it still is everywhere between Denver and the International Date Line. That written, not all pirates say ARRR!

A Chinese ratings firm yesterday made financial history and downgraded the US' credit rating from A+ to A. Meanwhile, hot money flowing into hedge funds and gold saw gold prices yesterday shoot to a historic high of US$1,670 per ounce.
It looks like the Chinese think the deal was a Satan Sandwich, too, and that we should have chosen the prize behind Door #3 instead.

First, Next Media Animation for the global perspective.

The US is going through a prolonged heatwave that has blanketed the eastern half of the country. Although the heatwave hit the South and Mid-west the hardest, the hot weather is moving towards the East Coast in the coming days.

As people in the affected areas turn on their air conditioners, the nation's power grid is coming under strain. This summer is a hot one not just for the US, but also in other corners of the globe.

Beijing recently hit 105F, nearing records. A Stanford study says heatwaves could become common in the US in the next 30 years due to global warming.

But more and more Americans are becoming skeptical.
Now the local one from WXYZ-TV.

Today's forecast.

George R.R. Martin began publishing his A Song of Ice and Fire series in 1996. The four books in the series so far have sold more than 7 million copies worldwide and been translated into 20 languages.Because of the series' great popularity, HBO decided to make the first book, 'Game of Thrones', into a 10-episode miniseries set to premiere on April 17, 2011. It cost $45 million, making it one of the most expensive TV shows ever made.

Martin takes about five years to finish each book, causing many fans to wonder whether the story will ever be finished. Martin has said that if he passes away before it's completed, all his notes and manuscripts will be destroyed. Fans' patience has been running at an all-time low due to continual delays in publication of the fifth book, 'A Dance with Dragons'. But good news everyone! Martin has announced the publication date of the fifth book. It will be available in bookstores in the UK and US on July 12th!

PS, Correction at 1:27, should be 七月 (July) :)
My comment: This is the geekiest animation yet. I approve!
