I downloaded Rift on July 12, 2011 as an early Father's Day gift to myself. I've been playing it or SWTOR ever since.

I'm here on my new computer.  The only glitch is that I'm having trouble signing into Disqus.  The sites that use that also allow other ways to sign in for comments, so it's not a total loss.  Other than that, so far so good, especially since I can play Star Wars: The Old Republic reliably again.  I missed playing.

Two months ago, I posted that I was able to log on to Star Wars: The Old Republic for the first time in a month.  Three weeks ago, I started having problems with the game again, as it would crash my computer after being on for ten minutes.  That's the kind of problem I had in July that made me turn down all my graphics settings so I could continue playing.  It also made my wife and I buy a new CPU that has been sitting behind me waiting for me to copy down my logins and passwords so I could set it up.  Well, today, the computer crashed during a Zoom call for work.  That does it.  I will be setting up the computer this weekend.

Reminds me of my old gaming buddy Dave. He rolled up a character with lame stats and called him Dork. The character turned out to be an OK fighter. He rolled up another character with lame stats and called him O'Dork. He turned out to be a great fighter!

I was able to log in after downloading and installing the update.  YAY!  I am happy to be back in the game.

I have been unable to play SW:TOR for more than a month because the update that I downloaded on Election Day causes the game to crash as soon as I click "play."  That's the bad news.  The good news is that I've used the past month to catch up on my work, which I mostly have.  However, I do miss the game, which is why I've been looking forward to the next update, which came out today.  I know it includes the Life Day overlay for the game.  What I'm hoping for is that it fixes the glitch that kicked me out of the game for the past month.  I'm not optimistic, as I've experienced this before in 2013, when I had to replace a CPU for a very similar reason.  I'll download it while I'm at the office and see if I can get on when I return home.  Wish me luck!

I've been a fan of the TierZoo YouTube channel since last fall, when PBS Eons collaborated with it on a video about elephants. It's based on the conceit that we're all playing a video game called "Outside" that has been going on since the origin of animals. Talk about living in a simulation! It explains evolution and adaptation in terms of video game strategies and tropes. Since I'm both a zoologist and a gamer, I find it both entertaining and enlightening.

With that out of the way, here is the channel's latest video about Crocodilians.

I checked all the relevant tags and found to my surprise that I hadn't posted any of their videos here before. It's time I made up for that oversight.

The last story line I finished in SW:TOR was the Jedi Knight. Here are the character's companions along with a senior jedi.  This story line is what would have been KOTOR III, so it's the most important in the continuity of the series.

Two weeks ago, I wrote "my main goal has been to play all eight class stories to completion" in Star Wars: The Old Republic." Last night, I finally completed the last class story, the Jedi Knight. Now on to getting a Republic character to level 70. I already have in Imperial character at the maximum level.

I missed blogging here yesterday. That's because, during the time I would have been posting a journal entry, I was in a couple of ops with the squad my wife leads on SWTOR. At the end of the second, I got one of my characters to level 70. I've been playing SWTOR for eight years now, but never got one of my characters that high. That's because my main goal has been to play all eight class stories to completion. Right now, I have seven completed and I'm about to land the last character on Corellia, the last planet in the sequence. I'll probably be done with the my main goal in a week.

I really dislike Taris. It's a bombed-out post-apocalyptic wasteland complete with zombies. I'm playing one of my toons there and I want to get through with my story quests there ASAP. For a more complete whine, read Star Wars: Zombies of The Old Republic at Crazy Eddie's Motie News.

io9/Gizmodo: Yes, Lucasfilm Is Developing Something for Knights of the Old Republic.
Knights of the Old Republic is an era and subset of Star Wars that fans have been clamoring to see in live action for a long time. And while that wait will continue, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy just confirmed that something based on the classic video game is potentially bubbling.

“You know we talk about [Knights of the Old Republic] all the time,” Kennedy told MTV at Star Wars Celebration. “Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now I have no idea where things fall but we have to be careful that there is a cadence to Star Wars that doesn’t start to feel like too much.”
As I wrote on Facebook yesterday, "This is the kind of good geeky news I've been waiting to read."

I never played either of the Knights of the Old Republic console games, but having played Star Wars: The Old Republic for the past eight years, I've become familiar with them by proxy. Some of the same characters even show up in SWTOR. One of them is HK-47, who has a delightfully misanthropic personality. Here he is in KOTOR 2 trashing the companions of his previous master, Revan.

How much did HK REALLY know about his former companions in K1? And did he SPY on Revan and Bastila during their more private moments?

Months ago, I promised that I would post about the Trooper companions when I got them all. Well, I finally finished the story line last night, so here they are.

This is a fun group and I especially enjoyed defrosting the ice queen during the romance.

The next class I plan on playing is the Bounty Hunter.  Stay tuned.

It's the start of a new month, so it's time to post the comments on posted on other blogs and saved to disk.

My comments on Midweek Cafe and Lounge, Vol. 88

Here's a cover by the band I'll be posting in comments this week, Queen - Dont Stop Me Now (by Broken Peach)

From the album "Jazz" - Song Written by Freddie Mercury & performed by Queen!
Now, the band's most popular video, "This is Halloween."

Song written by Danny Elfman for "The Nightmare Before Christmas film" directed by Henry Selick!
That's certainly appropriate for the holiday!

The bar/cafe is open

For tonight's drink, I'm sharing Tipsy Bartender's Cocktail Artist Mar-Gore-ita.

HERE'S THE RECIPE:

COCKTAIL ARTIST MAR-GORE-RITA

1 1/2 oz Tequila
1 1/2 oz Melon Liqueur
3 oz. (90ml) Tipsy Bartender Margarita Mix
Garnish: Dry Ice/Black Salt Rim/Bloody Lychee Eyeballs

PREPARATION
1. Rim edge of margarita glass with black salt. Set aside.
2. In an ice filled shaking glass combine tequila, melon liqueur and Tipsy Bartender margarita mix. Shake well.
3. Add dry ice and regular ice to rimmed glass, pour margarita mix over.
[4]. Garnish with lychee eyeballs.
DRINK RESPONSIBLY!"
Step 4 was orginally step 5, which prompted me to be a bit silly in the comments.
Preparation looks like a set of Monty Python rules: There is no rule number 6! In this case, there is no step number 4.
Let's see if Skyy John corrects it.

The bartender is taking requests.

Thanks for the good word. However, I was planning on taking a break from documentaries to return to winners of the other Grammy Awards before returning to the documentary winners. Do you think I should keep going with the documentary winners? I have a few posts of those stored up.

Whenever I'm on a holiday break, I give up on reality and go in search of a good fantasy. That usually means playing Star Wars: The Old Republic with my wife. As I wrote in Jedi Consular companions, "When I finish the Sith Warrior story, I have a Republic Trooper on his first companion," so I'm playing him. I just received my third companion, so it's not time for art of the entire crew yet. Maybe by Sunday.

I posted another FiendZone video in Polygon explains creepypasta as 'negative nostalgia' at Crazy Eddie's Motie News. Here, I'm posting another in the series that is just about gaming, not anything bigger.

Why is BioShock not considered a horror game? It's definitely scary enough! What moment do BioShock and Prey stop being survival horror and start being action games? Find out in this episode of FiendZone!

Over at Crazy Eddie's Motie News, I posted Polygon explains how climate change is changing horror. Here's another in the series that I don't plan on posting there.

Learn how survival horror games went from exploration-driven to hide-and-seek stealth games in this episode of FiendZone.
