...and one of several plan B's for HBO declines to renew contract with 'Sesame Street'. Also, it's on the way to Bakersfield.
It's quite surreal watching a police standoff on the freeway a mile from where I used to live on YouTube.🚓
I left a comment on this CityNerd video
Dec. 21st, 2023 01:48 pmThe preview image looked eerily familiar, so I zoomed in the sign listing the exits and read "Yorba Linda Blvd. Weir Canyon Road" then CA 241. That's heading east on CA 91 just past the intersection with CA 90 in Anaheim Hills. Hey, I used to live within a mile of where that picture was taken! Appropriately for the video, I commuted to downtown LA from there.
BTW, ever had The Cheesecake Factory sponsor a video? That would be a hoot!
That was about the background, which probably came from a drone carrying a telephoto lens, because the mountains would otherwise be much smaller. The foreground has been added from a traffic jam in Arizona.
I decided another PBS Terra video would fit better in Celebrating World Rainforest Day with 8SA and PBS Terra. Maybe next year.
Added video to Great Salt Lake post
Oct. 21st, 2022 01:50 pmI added this video to PBS NewsHour on Great Salt Lake shrinking during the current drought because it really helped tell the story I wanted. Not often I do that!
Podcast on La Brea Woman
Mar. 16th, 2022 03:04 pmThe Only Human In The La Brea Tar Pits
This is a story I learned when I worked at the Tar Pits museum from 1985-1989.
Rejected video for fire risk post
Feb. 23rd, 2022 01:43 pmI used a shorter video from KTLA that included a studio introduction instead of the following one in UCLA study shows high-risk fire days in southern California could double by 2100.
This isn't news to me. There were coyotes in the neighborhood attacking cats 50 years ago when I was a kid there. Some things don't change.
Cut off video for California drought post
Jul. 26th, 2021 05:32 pmI composed California's drought causing a crisis in agriculture and rural communities before I found the following video. I could have written a follow-up post, but decided to write Diversity one of the themes of the Outstanding Commercial nominees at the 2021 Emmy Awards instead.
Rejected video for California drought post
Jul. 5th, 2021 03:07 pmI used a longer video with a preview image I preferred in Drought, fire, and mudslides in California, a story I tell my students.
I decided not to use the following video in California theme parks may reopen as early as April 1, no fooling! A pandemic update because I found one with livelier local coverage, including reactions from Disney cast members and suppliers, and a more informative preview image.
California health officials set rules that would allow Disneyland and other theme parks, stadiums and outdoor entertainment venues to reopen as early as April 1 after being closed for nearly a year.
Old Facebook status
Oct. 5th, 2020 08:30 pmWhen I describe the environmental hazards of living in southern California, my students in Michigan ask "are those people crazy?" My response is no, they're in denial that they're in a struggle against Nature. Just because there isn't a real winter doesn't mean that Nature isn't fighting back. It's just sneakier.
I wrote "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah didn't talk about Trump's mishandling the fires — Trevor and his writers focused on how his followers are doing that on their own in another clip" in Meyers, Colbert, and Noah take closer looks at Trump ignoring science on fires and pandemic. This is the video where that happens.
Conspiracy theories add fuel to the west coast wildfires, California inmates fighting the fires can become professionals after their release, Florida brings back saggy pants, and a lock of Abraham Lincoln’s hair sells for $81,000.

Rejected video for California fires post
Sep. 8th, 2020 01:00 pmI used an ABC News clip in 'California wildfires illustrate the consequences of climate change' — PBS NewsHour instead of the one below from the BBC because I thought it would work better for a U.S. audience. This is despite the better video description.
Wildfires have burned through a record number of acres in California this year as firefighters continue to battle several large blazes across the state.
The state's department of forestry and fire protection, Cal Fire, says more than two million acres have burned, more than the size of Delaware.
One fire, El Dorado, which has spread over 7,000 acres, was started by a gender reveal party, officials say.
California is currently experiencing a record heatwave.
Los Angeles County reported its highest ever temperature of 49.4C (121F) on Sunday. Although temperatures are expected to drop from Tuesday onwards it may bring strong winds which could fan the flames, the National Weather Service warns.

I rejected the following video for Rose Parade cancelled because of pandemic, college football season in jeopardy in favor of two livelier ones with text saying the parade was cancelled in their preview images.
The 132nd Tournament of Roses Parade will not take place on Jan. 1, 2021, because of the coronavirus pandemic, parade officials announced Wednesday morning.

Rejected video for Disney post
Jun. 28th, 2020 06:48 pmI rejected the following video for Disney rethemes Splash Mountain and delays reopening Disneyland, responses to protests and pandemics in favor of one with better visuals and variety.
Disney on Wednesday announced it is postponing next month’s phased reopening of Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. Christina Pascucci reports for the KTLA 5 Morning News on June 25, 2020.
