I was planning on posting last month's top posts from Crazy Eddie's Motie News here today, but the power went out just before midnight. I was listening to a music video when everything went black and silent. I thought I felt and heard a thud, but I attributed that to the sudden stopping of everything electrical along with my surprise. It turned out there really was a thud. After the utility called me to ask if the power was still out and if anything on my end could have caused the outage, I opened my garage door to get some light on the fuse box. When I did, I saw a 25-30-foot-long white pine limb on the ground in front of and beside the garage. There was a shorter one next to it. When I went out in the back yard, I saw an entire 50-foot-tall black cherry tree on the ground between the power lines and my house. Also, the lines into the house were completely missing; only the connections to the house were still there. I'm surprised the thump wasn't louder!
The animals part of the adventure started with my dogs. Having no electronic devices to distract me, I paid a lot of attention to them, including snuggling up with the youngest in the better reclining chair in the living room while reading "American Gods." When they wanted out, I stayed out with them on the front porch. While snow lay on the ground from last night's storm (I'm sure the weight of the snow along with the wet thawed ground contributed to the fallen branches and trees), the sun was out and the air felt mild. The first time I went out with the pack of dachshunds, I saw the tracks of a deer that had bounded across the snow covering the front lawn. That didn't surprise me; deer are very common around my house. What did surprise me were the tracks the next time I went out with the dogs.
At least half a dozen animals had walked through the snow on the walkway in front of the house. When I looked closer, I saw they were giant bird footprints. A flock of wild turkeys had passed by while I was inside reading! For all I know, they were the same turkeys that made me stop as they crossed the road two weeks ago. As far as they're concerned, they do live out in the country instead of the suburbs.
The power is still out. I'm in a Starbucks near my house, although not the nearest, charging up my laptop and smartphone while I'm using the wifi to get my internet fix. In the car, I have more battery powered lamps and some firewood so that I can see inside my house and stay warm. As soon as my devices are charged, I'm heading home to be with my dogs.

Fan: Dachshunds
Jun. 12th, 2011 01:18 amMy wife and I own a pair of miniature dachshunds. We're such fans of them that when I saw Laney on Journalfen post a link to a video of weiner dogs, I immediately posted the link to our walls on Facebook.
Here's the video.
As an owner, I can tell you that everything the video says about dachshunds (other than the creationist silliness at the beginning) is absolutely true and the breed is that adorable.
Now, everyone sing along with the wiener dog song!
