This is probably the most played music from Final Fantasy, if not all video games, by drum corps.

Since I finally started playing a MMORPG, in this case Rift, after a long history of frustration with Final Fantasy XI and XIV, all of the lore about these games has become more relevant to me. For starters, here's something I stumbled across yesterday that I found absolutely fascinating.

The 7 Biggest Dick Moves in the History of Online Gaming

Of course, it's Cracked.

No surprise, World of Warcraft provides two of the seven. What was interesting was that EVE provided another two examples. Even more interesting was the difference between the two games' brands of outlandishly bad behavior. WOW's dick moves all involved highly dishonorable ways of killing lots of people. EVE's were all about theft, fraud, and embezzlement--in short, money, lots of money. Since I've never played EVE, I had no idea.

Rift is a very new game, so it didn't even exist when this article was published. Here's to hoping I don't see it used as an example in a follow-up.

Today, I upgraded from my free 7-day trial that I started Sunday to a paid subscription. Why today? Because Rift is having a Father's Day sale, dropping the price from $24.99 to $9.99. I couldn't resist. Besides, I like the idea of giving a Father's Day present to myself.

I also like the idea of playing with my wife. I've been watching her play Final Fantasy XI for more than three years and Final Fantasy XIV for almost a year. I've tried to join her three times, but issues prevented me from following through. First, I botched the account creation process by trying to do it on the cheap. Next, Play Online wouldn't accept my credit card, even though it was the same one my wife was using. During the interim, they changed their policy for authentication to prevent real-money traders from registering. Finally, I just couldn't load FF XIV--my drive wouldn't read the second layer. So, I gave up.

I've had none of these problems with Rift. I downloaded the program and started playing immediately. My wife and I have been having a great time playing together (and my wife solo), ever since. She likes it better than Final Fantasy XI already, and she's only been playing it for six days.

If any of the rest of you want to join my wife and me, we're on the Threesprings PvE server. Right now, I'm playing a warrior named Vicente while my wife alternates playing a cleric named Jillien and a warrior named Kallikay. If you want to come join us, click on the links below.

Still more from yesterday's Overnight News Digest: Science Saturday, the body of which concluded with a series of articles on video games from Michigan State University and Indiana University.

Michigan State as a video game design center, Guitar Hero as a way to teach kids to create art, and another installment of 'While the World Burns, Farmville thrives' behind the cut. )

Speaking of the connection between video games and the world burning, the servers for Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy XIV, and Metal Gear Online are shut down because of the earthquake and tsunami near Sendai.

As part of the efforts to conserve Japan's electricity usage in the wake of the Sendai earthquake and tsunami, Square Enix and Konami are temporarily shutting down servers for Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy XIV, PlayOnline, and Metal Gear Online.

Final Fantasy XI and FFXIV's servers were shut down at 3 p.m. PST on March 13 and are scheduled to be down for a week. In addition, players won't be billed for the April billing cycle. The FFXIV Lodestone site, official game forums, and Square Enix support center will provide updates when available.

Metal Gear Online servers have been down since March 12. Kojima Productions is unsure about when they'll be brought back online.
Those games aren't thriving while the world burns!
