Sanders shocks in Michigan while Trump wins state but loses Washtenaw County
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont upset former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of New York in last night's Michigan Democratic Primary, beating her statewide by 1.5 percent of the total vote. His margin in Washtenaw County was even greater at 11.7 percent.
"I am grateful to the people of Michigan for defying the pundits and pollsters and giving us their support," Sanders said in a statement quoted by the Detroit Free Press. "This is a critically important night. We came from 30 points down in Michigan and we're seeing the same kind of come-from-behind momentum all across America."
Washtenaw County also did its part in attempting an upset in the Michigan Republican Primary, giving Ohio Governor John Kasich a plurality of its votes to put him first in the county, 6.5 percent ahead of New York businessman Donald Trump. Unfortunately for Kasich and his local supporters, he came in third statewide behind Trump and Senator Ted Cruz of Texas.
Kasich had been in second place statewide most of the evening, but fell narrowly behind Cruz when all the votes were tallied. The final tallies gave Trump first with 36.5 percent, Cruz second at 24.9 percent, Kasich third with 24.2 percent, and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida fourth at 9.3 percent.
Despite his third-place showing in Michigan, Kasich remained optimistic. "(Think) about where we’ve come in the great state of Michigan: from single digits, (and) people saying, ‘How is he gonna do?’ to all-likelihood second place,” Kasich said as quoted by the Detroit Free Press. “You’re all familiar with March Madness, and now the home-court advantage is coming north. And next week we’re going to win the great state of Ohio.”
Trump responded to his victories in Michigan and Mississippi at a rally in Florida after both states were called for him. "I want to thank the people of Michigan and the people of Mississippi," Trump was quoted by the Detroit Free Press. "It is such a great honor. ... One of the things I’m most happy about is that turnout has been massive. It’s the single biggest story in politics today, the number of people coming out to vote."
The results qualified Trump, Cruz, and Kasich for delegates, but not Rubio, who fell below the fifteen percent treshold required by Michigan Republican Party rules. Estimates from the Michigan Republican Party cited by the Detroit Free Press gave Trump twenty-five of Michigan's fifty-nine delegates, while Cruz and Kasich each received seventeeen.
On the Democratic side, FiveThirtyEight's delegate tracker listed Sanders as receiving sixty-nine of Michigan's 130 pledged delegates. Clinton earned sixty-one. However, she likely has a majority of the state's total delegates, as nearly all of Michigan's superdelegates are supporting her, including every Democratic member of the state's Congressional delegation, who have all endorsed her.
