I am reminded of Kelly Freas' classic poster for NASA. Well, with any luck at all, SpaceX and the other rocket companies will keep us in space so we can at least see the way back to the moon...

People really overestimate the degree to which Afghanistan is the graveyard of Empires. Now, Russia tends to be the graveyard of Empires for Reals, moreso than Afghanistan itself. People also forget the landing on the Moon was for fear of Russian moon bases more than pure science. :(
