My comments on A Farewell to “Bargain Shopping.

I was wondering when you would get around to writing about the Retail Apocalypse as a topic worthy of its own post. I'm glad to see that you did. I'm especially glad that you paid attention to the demise of KMart. As I've mentioned in your comment section before, Sears gets nearly all the attention, while KMart is usually an afterthought.

Speaking of the Retail Apocalypse, people are now asking if is JCPenney the next Sears. Their stock fell below $1.00, making JCPenney a penny stock. That may not affect you and your neighbors, but it will hit people in the cities and bigger towns as more stores close.

Finally, if we want to see what a country, society, and economy look like in full collapse, there is always the bad example of Venezuela. We seem to be a long way from that, but I'm sure other readers will think the journey is shorter than it looks from here.

Girl Scouts across the country are selling cookies now, so today I'm pouring Girl Scout Cookie Shots.

Here's the recipe:

GIRL SCOUT COOKIE SHOT

1/2 oz. (15ml) Coffee Liqueur
1/2 oz. (15ml) Irish Cream
1/2 oz. (15ml) Peppermint Schnapps

PREPARATION
1. Combine coffee liqueur, Irish cream, and peppermint schnapps in a shaker with ice and shake well.
2. Strain mix into a shot glass.
DRINK RESPONSIBLY!

My comment on Hunting for Golem.

The other political circus in town, the partial government shutdown ties into the Trump-Russia investigation. In his monologues on "The Late Show," Stephen Colbert noted that the FBI along with the rest of the Department of Justice isn't getting paid. He then did his impression of Trump calling Chuck and Nancy telling them to eat his butt as an opening offer in budget negotiations upon hearing that news. Well, the FBI is still working, they're just not getting paid. That might make them even more incensed at Trump.

6 oz. (180ml) Boiling Water
1 Slice Lemon Peel

Today is National Popcorn Day so I am pouring Buttered Popcorn Infused Rum.

If you love flavored liquors, you have to try...BUTTERED POPCORN INFUSED RUM! We take freshly popped popcorn and infuse it, with butter, into rum for that perfect movie theater popcorn smell and taste. Next time you have a movie night in, rather than a bowl of popcorn you can sit down with a glass of this! This is such a fun infusion and the mixing possibilities are endless--try it in the place of regular rum to give a crazy twist to any cocktail recipe!

BUTTERED POPCORN INFUSED RUM
Popcorn
1 Stick of Butter, clarified
5 oz. (150 ml) Rum

My comment on Battle Royale.

I'm having the same kind of reaction to your entry about the showdown over the shutdown and border wall that I have to watching MSNBC or CNN on the subject; I become annoyed and frustrated as I suffer from outrage fatigue. I find it a lot healthier to laugh, so I'm watching the late-night comedians. Even then, the repetition is starting to get to me. Seth Meyers closer looks at the border wall and the shutdown, for example, ended up recycling a lot of the same points that John Oliver made on the border wall nearly three years ago. Oh, well, I'm an environmentalist; I should approve of recycling.

My comment on Were the Trump Tower Meeting and the Moscow Tower Related?

I recommend you try to get Adam McKay interested in writing this screenplay. He won an Oscar for the screenplay for "The Big Short" and is nominated for another for the screenplay for "Vice," so he can definitely handle the weirdness of the subject matter. Whether he would be interested would be another matter.

My comments on In the Deep Mid-Winter.

"[T]he government shutdown standoff may not be the “winner” move that Nancy Pelosi thought it would be." Or Trump thought it would be, for that matter. The economic effects of the shutdown include all kinds of disruption as well as the potential for making the next recession happen sooner. That might make all of the jokes about the government shutdown from people like Stephen Colbert less funny as time goes on.

"Kamala, Liz, and Kirsten will mud-wrestle for dominance, but so far, the only cards they can show are the race-and-gender jokers in the deck." Don't forget Tulsi Gabbard, although if you do, you'll be in good company; most political watchers don't think she has much of a chance at the nomination. Also, if you're skewering left-leaning women, don't forget Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. While she is ineligible to run for President because of her age, she's making lots of news between her dancing and proposing to raise the top tax bracket to 70%.

My comment on Stone Cold Counter-Story

I'd like to call attention to this quote from our host: "Mr. Stone represents a certain kind of stock character in American politics: The Joker. In the Batman sense of the role: the sociopathic trickster." Not only does Roger Stone have a Nixon tattoo on his back, but he has dressed up as The Joker, including full evil clown makeup, and tweets out himself in costume on occasion. Stone doesn't just represent The Joker, he is a real-life one.

On the subject of reality imitating fantasy for our entertainment, Donald and Melania Trump and Kellyanne Conway earned four Razzie Awards among them for their appearances in "Death of a Nation" and "Fahrenheit 11/9." Donald J. Trump (As Himself) is nominated for Worst Actor and he and "His Self Perpetuating Pettiness" for Worst Screen Combo, while Kellyanne Conway and Melania Trump as themselves are up for Worst Supporting Actress.

Going from the ridiculous to the sublime, at least in terms of the awards, if not necessarily the nominee, "RBG" earned two Oscar nominations, one for Best Documentary Feature and another for Best Original Song. These are the same two categories that "An Inconvenient Truth" won, but I don't expect "RBG" to repeat the feat, as I anticipate either "Shallow" from "A Star Is Born" or "All the Stars" from "Black Panther" will win Original Song instead.

Between the song title "After the Heat" and the polar vortex bringing near-record cold temperatures to most of the eastern half of the country, the drink that strikes my fancy today is The Elsa Cocktail (from Frozen) - Tipsy Bartender.

Watch Nikki make this drink, The Elsa Cocktail - based on the movie Frozen!!
I promise to have something warmer tomorrow. In the meantime, the bartender is taking requests.

Here is the "something warmer" I promised for today. It's Nutty Irish Coffee, which I was orginally planning on posting as the fourth drink last week.

The Irish coffee gets a creamy and hazelnut twist!
Tomorrow is Bubble Gum Day, so I plan on having a drink that matches the theme.

Happy Bubble Gum Day! As I promised above, I am serving a drink that matches the holiday, The Bubble Gum Colada.

BUBBLE GUM PINA COLADA

Bag of Bubble Gum
Bottle of Rum
4 oz. (120ml) Cream of Coconut
Pink Frosting
Lollipop

PREPARATION
1. To a small empty bottle add about 10 pieces of bubble gum and fill with rum.
2. Let the bubble gum and the rum infuse overnight.
3. Rim a glass with pink frosting.
4. Blend ice, 2 oz. (60ml) bubble gum infused rum and 2 oz. (60ml) cream of coconut to create the pink layer. Pour into glass.
5. Blend ice, 2 oz. (60ml) rum and 2 oz. (60ml) cream of coconut to create the white layer. Pour into glass.
6. Alternate between pouring the pink and white layers.
7. Garnish with a lollipop. Enjoy.
