Chelsea, Dexter, Milan, and Saline elect city council members

Four Washtenaw County cities in addition to Ann Arbor elected city council members Tuesday. Chelsea, Dexter, Milan, and Saline held non-partisan general elections that generally returned incumbents to office. Milan also elected its Mayor and a member of the library board.

Incumbents Frank Hammer and Jane Pacheco returned to Chelsea City Council along with newcomer Peter Feeney, who replaces current council member Rod Anderson. According to the Washtenaw County Clerk's website, Feeney came in first with 456 votes, Pacheco second with 452 votes, and Hammer third with 362, barely defeating Tony Iannelli, who earned 353 votes.

"Thanks to everyone for voting in today's election" wrote Pacheco on her campaign's Facebook page. "I am looking forward to serving as your Councilmember."

In Dexter, incumbents James Smith and Raymond Tell came in first and second with 242 and 236 votes respectively. Newcomer Zach Michels earned 224 votes for the third seat, defeating Pete Meloche with 197 votes. Michels replaces outgoing council member Joe Semifero.

Milan's incumbent Mayor Michael Armitage won re-election with 603 votes, sixty percent of the ballots, to challenger D. Nie's 399 votes. Milan Mayor Pro-Tem Martha Churchill also returned to city council with 500 votes. Joining her will be newcomers Christian Thompson and Mary Kerkes, who garnered 546 and 490 votes respectively. They defeated incumbent council member Mike Williams, who got 409 votes and challengers Elizabeth Smith and Thomas Dupuis, who respectively earned 470 and 376 votes. Robert Chidester was unchallenged in winning a seat on the library board.

Linda Terhaar won re-election to Saline City Council with 1147 votes. Newcomers Heidi McClelland with 1170 votes and John J. Ceo with 1146 votes won the other two seats. The trio defeated Lee Bourgoin, who only managed 820 votes.

Turnout in three municipalities exceeded that of the Washtenaw County as a whole, where 12.29 percent of the voters came to the polls. The highest turnout was in Saline with 27.41 percent. Milan had the second highest at 24.27 percent, while Chelsea came in third with 15.72 percent. Only Dexter fell behind the county-wide turnout with 12.13 percent voting.
