Rejected video for California fires post

I used an ABC News clip in 'California wildfires illustrate the consequences of climate change' — PBS NewsHour instead of the one below from the BBC because I thought it would work better for a U.S. audience. This is despite the better video description.

Wildfires have burned through a record number of acres in California this year as firefighters continue to battle several large blazes across the state.

The state's department of forestry and fire protection, Cal Fire, says more than two million acres have burned, more than the size of Delaware.

One fire, El Dorado, which has spread over 7,000 acres, was started by a gender reveal party, officials say.

California is currently experiencing a record heatwave.

Los Angeles County reported its highest ever temperature of 49.4C (121F) on Sunday. Although temperatures are expected to drop from Tuesday onwards it may bring strong winds which could fan the flames, the National Weather Service warns.

Hans Zimmer's themes for BBC Earth series

Over at Booman Tribune, I've decided to make Midweek Cafe and Lounge, Vol. 60 all Hans Zimmer and his collaborators. I began with two extended trailers with the series theme music.

First, the extended 'Planet Earth II' trailer.

Radiohead, one of the world’s most acclaimed rock bands, and Hans Zimmer, one of the planet’s most successful movie and TV composers, have joined forces to produce an exclusive track for BBC America’s upcoming natural history series, Planet Earth: Blue Planet II, coming to BBC America in early 2018.

Radiohead and Hans Zimmer’s orchestrally reimagined version of the Radiohead song ‘(ocean) bloom’ from their 2011 album sees Radiohead’s Thom Yorke rerecord the vocals and produced by Russell Emanuel of Bleeding Fingers Music, the company which also crafted the BAFTA & Emmy-nominated score to BBC America's Planet Earth II.

Thom Yorke of Radiohead shares our excitement for the project: “Bloom was inspired by the original Blue Planet series so it’s great to be able to come full circle with the song and reimagine it for this incredible landmark’s sequel. Hans is a prodigious composer who effortlessly straddles several musical genres so it was liberating for us all to work with such a talent and see how he wove the sound of the series’ and Bloom together.”

In turn, Hans Zimmer says: “Bloom appears to have been written ahead of its time as it beautifully reflects the jaw-dropping lifeforms and seascapes viewers are introduced to in Blue Planet II. Working with Thom, Jonny and the boys has been a wonderful diversion and it’s given me an interesting peek into their musical world. They’ve been incredible to work with and I hope everyone likes the track.”

I posted 'The Shape of Water,' 'Blade Runner 2049,' and 'Coco' among speculative fiction winners at the BAFTA Awards at Crazy Eddie's Motie News with acceptance speeches from all the speculative fiction winner. I didn't post the opening of the ceremonies, because I didn't have an official video to do so. Now I do: Cirque du Soleil's OVO at the BAFTAs - The British Academy Film Awards: 2018 - BBC One.

Model D Media has found some fans of #Detroit

In my previous Buzz about Detroit from Model D Media post, I noted:

Nearly all of my most popular articles here seem to the ones in which I comment on a New York Times article about how Detroit and its suburbs are dealing with contraction. This one fits that mold, except that it's more optimistic.

That seems to be the theme for nearly all the articles from Model D Media's Buzz page. Of course, one should expect that from a publication whose Twitter profile states:

We love Detroit. We write about Detroit. We photograph Detroit. We film Detroit. We want you to love Detroit, too.

...And whose attitude I characterized as "Optimism but not business as usual." They're certainly living up to both my billing and their own.

This week, I present three articles that protray Detroit, not as a disaster and not as a place being reborn from its ashes, but as a phoenix worth visiting. No, I'm not kidding. Detroit is now a place for the adventurous to visit and settle in.
